Honsinger Announces Addition of Gaffney to Women's Basketball Staff

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Eckerd College women's basketball head coach Paul Honsinger has named Sarah Gaffney as an assistant coach, it was announced on Thursday.

Gaffney comes to Eckerd after serving as the Director of Basketball Operations at Division I Elon in 2010-11. Gaffney replaces Phoenicia Wright, who stepped down to dedicate more time to her full-time career with the Pinellas County School system.

“I couldn't be happier to welcome Sarah,” said Honsinger, whose 2010-11 team tied a school record with 17 wins and reached the Sunshine State Conference Championship semifinals.

“She has valuable student-athlete experience and is excited to work with our players and our system. Sarah will be a tremendous asset on our bench.”

Gaffney was part of an Elon team that reached the Women's Basketball Invitational in 2011, the first postseason appearance in program history. She was involved with scouting, coordinating practice schedules, oversaw student managers and coordinated summer camps and community service events.

Prior to Elon, Gaffney spent the previous season as the assistant women's basketball coach at Guilford Technical Community College in Greensboro, N.C. She helped the Titans to a 29-3 record and an NJCAA Division I Region X Championship.

She previously worked as a student manager for the UNC Greensboro women's basketball team for two seasons.
As a student-athlete, she played two seasons at Mohawk Valley Community College (N.Y.) and was a first-team NJCAA All-America selection. She was also named the National Student-Athlete of the Year.

She led the Hawks to 67 wins in two seasons and set school records for 3-pointers made in a season and career. She was named the 2006 NJCCA Region III Athlete of the Year and Women's Basketball Player of the Year.

Gaffney graduated in 2009 from UNCG with a bachelor's degree in physical education and community, youth, sport development and received the 2009 UNCG Student Excellence Award.
