WINTER PARK, Fla. – A total of 55 Eckerd College student-athletes were officially named to the Sunshine State Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for the Spring 2012 semester as announced by Jay Jones and the league office earlier today.
Overall, 799 student-athletes from the league's nine institutions received the academic distinction for the Spring 2012 semester, while 110 individuals carried a perfect 4.00 GPA for the semester.
After an impressive 28 Eckerd student-athletes (over 42 percent) earned the academic honor following the fall, an even better near-50 percent earned the distinction spanning the spring (55 of 112 at 49 percent).
A total of 83 student-athletes landed on the SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll spanning the 2012-13 academic year.
Eckerd's Mara Shingleton (women's golf), Christine Hammerschmidt (women's tennis) and Hanna Segal (women's tennis), all carried perfect 4.00 GPA's for the spring semester.
To be eligible for the Commissioner's Spring Honor Roll, a student-athlete must post a minimum grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. Participants in EC's sports of men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's and women's golf and men's and women's tennis, were eligible for the honor roll.
The Tritons' softball program had 12 student-athletes make the list for the spring, an additional 10 from baseball also qualified, while the golf, tennis and basketball programs, each had a combined 11 selections.
Having won 78 national championships since the league was founded in 1975, the SSC's student-athletes have also proven to be successful in the classroom. The NCAA recently announced that, for the fourth consecutive year, the Sunshine State Conference led all 22 Division II conferences with an Academic Success Rate of 86 percent.
