Tennis Continues Play at USTA/ITA South Regional Championships

LAKELAND, Fla.
– The Eckerd College men's and women's tennis programs moved into day two of competition at the USTA/ITA South Regional Championships hosted by Florida Southern College on Friday.

After wrapping up the first round of championship flight singles and doubles draws in Thursday's action, the Tritons transitioned into the consolation portion in the bracket.

The men's contests were played at the Beermann Family Tennis Center while women's matches took place at the Wynee Warden Tennis Complex.

Saturday and Sunday's action will be solely played at the Wynee Warden Tennis Complex.

Eckerd finished Friday against more of the toughest competition the South Region has to offer and under the leadership of Head Coach Erin Koenig and assistant coach Ben Maxwell, the Tritons held their own.

Sophomore Carson Trapp was the lone Eckerd consolation bout to be finished on Thursday as she fell by a 6-1, 6-3, decision against Second-Team All-Sunshine State Conference selection Ashley Rosenberg of Rollins College.

In doubles consolation action on the men's side, sophomore Stephen Felman and senior Dylan Randazzo advanced through the quarterfinals to earn a semifinal date against a pairing from the University of West Alabama tomorrow.

Felman and Randazzo cruised past Nicholas Battistini and Mark Heimberger of Palm Beach Atlantic University by an 8-3 score.

The winner of their semifinal match tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. will face the victor of Florida Tech/West Alabama for the consolation crown.

The men fell in straight sets against respective singles foes from West Alabama, Florida Southern, Saint Leo University and Florida Tech.

Trapp/Taylor Bullock and Gipson Hawn/Amy Naula are still scheduled to meet Abbey Keister/Katie Close (Florida Tech) and Mona Mansour/Olivia Matuszak (Barry University) after a handful of quarterfinal winners advanced on byes.

Both Tritons' women's doubles matches will start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

The rest of the Tritons' women in singles were edged in straight sets to their opponents from Saint Leo, Palm Beach Atlantic and West Alabama.
