SUNSET BEACH, N.C.
– Senior Georgia Gordon carded a 39 on the back nine on her way to a two-way tie for 28th as the Eckerd College women's golf program opened the fall season at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate hosted by Lenior-Rhyne University and Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) University.

The Tritons ended their first round on the links with a cumulative 363 to currently stand in 19th of 21 teams. The 109-player field began play this morning in crisp, 41-degree weather at the 5,988-yard par-72 setup at the Sea Trail Resort.

Tusculum (Tenn.) College (307), paced by current individual leader Emee Herbert (73, 1st), leads the tournament by a four-stroke margin over Carson Newman (Tenn.) College (311).

“It's tough to replace three of our girls from graduation last year because we're trying to supplement their depth,” EC Head Coach Bill Buttner said. “We're going out there to see what kind of placements we have and there will be a bit of a learning curve as we progress this year.”

“The course played fine and the greens are big,” he added. “There's nothing hard about the course, but it's about putting it all together.”

Gordon led the Eckerd contingent with a first-round total of 80 (+8). She is just one stroke off the pace set by players in the top 25.

Mara Shingleton (t90th) posted a 92, Jenee Vanderstine (t96th) added a 95 and Christina Brewster (t98th) pulled in with a 96. Whitney Edwards rounded out the Tritons' scoring with a 148 in first-round play.

The Tritons will wrap up their first event of the fall tomorrow with one round of play remaining.
