SUNSET BEACH, N.C. – Senior
Georgia Gordon landed a top-25 finish and the Eckerd College women's golf program improved its team score by seven strokes to wrap up play in the fall opener at the Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
The Tritons (363-356--719) tied Limestone College for 18th in the 21-team field after beginning today's final round in solo 19th.
The University of North Carolina-Pembroke claimed the team title and the Braves also locked in the No. 1 and No. 2 individual finishes thanks to Dana Watkins and Meghan Moore.
“It's a bit of an unknown what we're going to do because of the new faces,” EC Head Coach
Bill Buttner reflected. “But the attitude was there and now it's about getting individual mechanics and short games better. It's a work in progress.”
Gordon finished the two-day event in a tie for 20th, moving up the leaderboard as she fired an 81 in the final round. She was in a two-way tie for 28th heading into the second round.
Improvement down the line was shown by the rest of the Tritons' rotation as
Mara Shingleton,
Jenee Vanderstyne,
Christina Brewster and
Whitney Edwards, all scored better than their first-round 18-hole total.
The Tritons will look to carry their final-round momentum on the links over to the Saint Leo Invitational set for Oct. 17-18 in Saint Leo, Fla.
“The goal is to improve, whether that may be three-putting or putting the ball in play, depending on the individual,” Buttner added. “And we did that based on our scores today.”
